How to Select Inverter Power

This is to help selecting inverter and battery.
When you go to shop you got to tell what is the VA of the inverter you need and
what is the AH and voltage of battery you need.
VA - Volt Ampere
AH - Ampere hour

1. Calculate your power requirement.

E. g: If you have 2 Fans(usually 80 W each) and 2 Tube Lights(usually 40 W each)
Power Required for fans = 2*80 + 2*40 = 240 W

2 . Find the power factor of inverter

For most of the new UPS it is 0.8

3. Calculate the power of inverter

     = Power requirement/power factor

Here, 240/0.8 = 300
You need a minimum 300 VA interver. Better to choose the next above one. E.g 400 VA

4. Find your back up requirement

Suppose you want to run all those devices for 4 hour

5. Calculate AH of battery

Battery AH required = Power requirement * time / battery voltage
E.g: Generaally 12 V batteries are used for inverter
   So, 300 * 4 / 12 = 100 AH

So you need a 400 VA inverter with 100 AH battery.

A few tips

There are basically two types of inverters. Square wave and Sine Wave.
Square wave inverters are cheaper and more efficient but it may not be suitable for all devices. E.g. Motor, CFL.

There are different types of batteries but tubular batteries are recommended for inverters. These are a bit costlier but these charges fast and requires less maintanance.

Setting up Set top box for surround sound

Now a days all the HD set-top boxes for TV are coming with optical or co-axial digital output.
These are some of the providers in India: Airtel,Tata Sky, Videocon,Dish TV,Relaiance, Doordarshan.
You may want to connect this to your home theater so that you may experience 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound or stereo with high quality.
